Write for On The House

On The House is a Houston-based art, culture, and nightlife newsletter focused on how this city actually feels: where people go, how they gather, and what’s quietly shaping the city.

We’re opening up paid submissions from Houston-based writers, critics, and observers with good taste and a strong point of view.

What we’re looking for

We’re interested in original, reported or essay-driven pieces grounded in Houston life, including (but not limited to):

  • First-person cultural essays

  • Place-based reporting (neighborhoods, venues, scenes)

  • Art, music, food, and nightlife criticism

  • Observations on taste, class, leisure, and social life in Houston

  • Stories that feel specific, thoughtful, and lived-in

We’re less interested in listicles or event rundowns, and more interested in voice, perspective, and attention.

Length + pay

  • 500–800 words

  • $100 per published piece

  • Payment sent within 14 days of publication

Who should submit

  • Writers based in Houston or with deep ties to the city

  • Emerging or established writers with a strong voice

You don’t need a huge following! Clarity of thought matters more.

How to pitch

Send:

  • A short pitch (1-2 paragraphs)

  • Why this story belongs in On The House

  • Any relevant clips (optional but helpful)

Email: [email protected]
Subject line: OTH Submission — [Proposed Title]

We read every pitch, but due to volume may not be able to respond to all. If accepted, we’ll be in touch. Thank you and we look forward to reading your ideas!
