Dancing with Disclosure

You’re not sad, you just had to (spontaneously) go to a concert

Our comment section on seeing Disclosure on October 2nd.

Last Thursday we went to see Disclosure somewhat spontaneously, buying tickets the night before. It's certainly not our first time. We've probably seen them in Seattle, in New York, definitely in Southern California but honestly, the details are a little blurry.

Their debut album Settle hits a nostalgic punch in the gut to a time when things felt golden, when life felt worth living and the future felt hopeful. We listened to their songs in the car on the way to Bayou Music Center to get a quick recap of their discography, and when "When a Fire Starts to Burn" boomed through our speakers, I got hit with that one-two combo of nostalgia and joy that sometimes only house music can give me.

As far as EDM shows go, Bayou Music Center treated Disclosure well. The duo, Howard and Guy Lawrence (which I'm just now finding out are brothers) noted early into the show that they'd had their fix of BBQ. (Honestly, I wouldn't be mad if they wanted to wear cowboy hats next time for a song because why not.) Disclosure's production and light show were tasteful without being overbearing or overly showy. It's not often you get the actual singer to perform live at these types of concerts, but they creatively included visual snippets of the performers onscreen singing their lyrics to give us that illusion. The best way I could describe it: it was like watching a music video, in a good way!

Did we have the best view? No. Was the crowd a vibe? Maybe. Did we dance our butts off? Hell yeah.

There's something about seeing an artist who defined a specific era of your life. Disclosure is a bit of a time capsule for me, a reminder of when anything felt possible. And for a few hours on a Thursday night in downtown Houston, that dancing feeling came flooding back.

LATELY IN HOUSTON

Anya Tish Gallery turns off their lights… After its 30 year run, Anya Tish Gallery plans to close its doors at the end of the year. It’s certainly an end of an era for the contemporary art scene in Montrose. Their last exhibition “End of an Era” will feature artists they’ve worked throughout their time which you can see starting on October 24th for about a month. After that the gallery will only be available to view through appointments. An end of an era indeed.

Horni Tonk Tuesdays? You read that right. Every week, Charley’s Big Top draws in a diverse crowd of fans wanting to get their honky tonk fix in H-town. Horni Tonk’s cofounder Christopher Seymore says, “It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you’re from. It’s just being there in the moment, together.” Now that’s a commitment to building community.

Arcade machines, something in Beyonce’s music video, and more! Funplex has recently sold everything, and we mean everything, as a result of their closure after 40 years. One of the most talked about items, the Ferris wheel, was a popular item in the auctions. I mean, how often can you buy a Ferris wheel?
