LATELY IN HOUSTON
Three horses pulled up to Whataburger. Because in Houston, trail rides and fast food coexist beautifully. Dennis "Snipes" Sullivan captured the most Texas moment possible: cowboy culture meets orange-and-white stripes.
What’s your favorite season? Crawfish. Texas crawfish farming is muddy, laborious work, but it feeds Houston's boil-pot obsession. Bayou Best Crawfish harvests up to 12,000 pounds daily from 900 flooded rice paddies during peak season (March-May). Crawfish bury themselves in cold weather, evade otters and raccoons, and reach Houston restaurants in under 30 minutes. Rice farmers turn to mudbugs for cash flow. It's wet, dirty, and delicious.
Dresses for all the girls! Houston non-profit Graceful Gowns turns prom into empowerment for Title I students who can't afford formalwear. Founded by Shanté Michelle Thompson, the org provides free gowns, accessories, mentorship, and confidence-building.
(No) reservations, hidden. A speakeasy honoring Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade, Chester Bennington, and Mac Miller opens soon. Owner Daniel Wolfe, who's battled depression, dedicates 10% of proceeds to mental health orgs. Eighteen $18 cocktails include color-changing gin and brisket fat-washed bourbon. City Cellars debuts Cocktails Unknown on March 3rd.
Bull semen is Houston Rodeo's quietest moneymaker. Nearly 3,000 industry pros from 80 countries converge to buy "straws" of prize genetics. Vials run $25-$30 (thousands for Wagyu), generating $4.5M+ annually. American Brahman genes bred for Texas heat now fortify herds globally. It's part livestock show, part genetic supermarket, all USDA-approved.
