LATELY IN HOUSTON
Celebrating Juneteenth. It’s Juneteenth weekend, and Houston and Galveston are not playing around. From a poetry showcase at a historic museum to bike rides, live concerts, and a full-on parade, there's something every day. Maze and Chante Moore close it out at Miller Outdoor Theatre Friday night. ChòpnBlọk is on the move. Permits suggest chef Ope Amosu's Michelin-rated, James Beard–nominated West African concept is opening a third location at Greenside Memorial. It’s a $1.25M build-out targeting a November debut, plus a $200K expansion of the Montrose flagship on Westheimer. Neither is officially confirmed, but the paperwork tells a pretty clear story. Chron
Streaming who? DJs in Houston have too many records, and the city is reaping the spoils. Houstonia tracks the vinyl revival driven by DJ Good Grief's Record Klub, DJ Elevated's Third Ward Vinyl Club, Good Junk Vintage at Axelrad, and Brian Powell spinning-and-selling at 93' Til. Bars, brunches, and bookshops are joining in. Houstonia Magazine
Soccer meets the canvas in EaDo. A Beautiful Game: Every Match Leaves a Mark opened June 13th at Mitochondria Gallery, just blocks from the FIFA Fan Fest. Curated by Houston native Jackson Smith, the free month-long show gathers eight artists from the US and Africa exploring soccer as identity, migration, and connection. On view through July 3. Houston's going full orange. The Dutch are bringing their iconic Oranje Fanwalk stateside ahead of the Netherlands vs. Sweden World Cup match on June 20. The 2.5-mile parade kicks off 8:45am from Rice Stadium led by the Oranje Bus that crossed the Atlantic to Galveston, and ends at NRG before noon kickoff. Live entertainment starts at 8am.
