LATELY IN HOUSTON

Cowgirls up! Houston Rodeo's breakaway roping event is leveling the playing field for women: $65K top prize and equal pay since 2022. The PRCA-WPRA partnership exploded the sport from 35 to 560 rodeos by 2025, driving a surge in female entries (70% of all rodeo competitors now). But financial gaps remain: most rodeos still offer lower prizes than barrel racing or men's events. The Barbed Wire

Serendipity on foot in Htown? Finally. Houston's East End is a walkable wonderland hiding in plain sight: cumbia lessons at Room 808, daiquiris at Voodoo Queen, taxidermied raccoons at D&W Lounge. Two light-rail stops from downtown, sixteen square miles of Segundo Barrio, Eastwood, Magnolia Park. James Beard chefs, pop-up markets, and entrepreneurs building third places. It's Houston messy, but mighty. Texas Monthly

Champagne trails and pickle juice cocktails. Musaafer chef Mayank Istwal hosts 70 guests annually at Blackwood Educational Land for a Michelin-starred farm dinner that sells out every spring. April 9th's sixth soiree features 10 courses, live fire, three stages, foraged greens, and seasonal spices flown from India. Spring may be brief but this dinner makes it count. Houstonia Magazine

Stopping by "Boo's At Night.”  Boo's Burgers in East End is earning institution status one smash burger and block party at a time. Owner Joseph Boudreaux traded pop-ups for a brick-and-mortar on Navigation's Esplanade, hosting "Boo's At Night" events with DJs, JDM cars, and collabs like halal fried chicken. Born from Houston nostalgia, built for community. Chron

Out at the Rodeo hits a milestone! 3,000 attendees, $10K in wine sales, and a City of Houston proclamation declaring March 21 "Out at the Rodeo Day." Now in its fifth year (10 since founding), the LGBTQ event has grown from 40 people to drag shows, commemorative bandanas, and official recognition. No longer just a side gathering, it's a full presence at Houston's biggest tradition. Outsmart Magazine
