LATELY IN HOUSTON
Dorsey’s Houston exhibition. Artist Auudi Dorsey skips jazz’s famous names and paints the working musicians, patrons, and cramped juke joints where the music actually lived. Tight, claustrophobic compositions and a recurring red Solo cup link segregation-era bars to today’s New Orleans. His point: “joy within these histories is not a softening of the past but a more complete account of it.” Refusés Journal Substack
Texas leads the nation in book bans. Banned Books Week just closed out last week, and one of the main targets is LGBTQ+ themes. Kit O’Connell asks why non-binary identity spooks some people so much. Their Halloween advice: embrace the monster label and rampage in the streets. The Barbed Wire
So, anyone wanna rent ISS? NASA is putting the International Space Station’s “For Rent” sign up for the 2030’s. Proposals for commercial space stations are due December 8th, with contracts (about eight years, extendable to 15) awarded around April 2027. The goal is to hand low Earth orbit to private companies while NASA chases the Moon and Mars. Houston Public Media
“Hot people everywhere.” Courtney Chelese, “The Socialite,” ranks 35 Houston apartments she’d actually be seen in, tagged for walkability, “hot people everywhere,” and budget (under $1.6K). The full piece is paywalled but hey, if you’re apartment hunting right now, we say go for it. The Socialite Substack
